Your approach seems to lend well more to a reframing approach to those addicted to substances which still leads to a recovery.

I could see danger in considering addicts to being the “most human.” There is an element of glorification that exists.

Even though we disagree on classifications, I think there is commonality on the idea that the current definition of addiction is archaic. It may be more beneficial not to be named a disease or choice but something else entirely. What’s currently missing that we both mentioned is the human element. With more humanity in the definition, we approach addicts differently. When that’s done, we can reframe, heal, and recover.
