United We Will Always Stand

An American Poem

Tattered clothes, shaking teeth, and frozen feet
The eve of the day we remember the Lord’s birth; a day of rest
We teeter on the edge of defeat
So we cross this frozen river to face God’s biggest test
Our never-ending fight for freedom
United we will always stand

Blood in my eyes, sand on my lips, and ringing in my ears
At the foot of this foreign beach, I lay next to hundreds of my fallen brothers
Death ain’t something I’ll ever fear again
When we win, send my body wrapped in my flag home to my mother
Our never-ending fight for freedom
United we will always stand

Debris in my hair, cuts on my face, and her fragile body in my arms
If I can get her down these 70 flights of stairs, her children will see her again
My own kids cross my mind as I reach outside without harm
But I run back into the building to the hundreds still in need as I say my last amen
Our never-ending fight for freedom
United we will always stand
